“Look after yourself”

This phrase (or the equivalent – “Mind yourself”) is said by many on a daily basis. But do we actually take it into consideration? We are all so busy nowadays is there even time to look after yourself? I believe that how you are feeling effects everything you do. Whether it be work, school or doing daily tasks at home. If you feel crap, the task you are doing will suffer as you are not putting in 100% of your effort. It is so important to look after yourself and your Mental Health in order to perform well. So how can you do this? There are so many different things you can do to take care of your Mental Health and I have chosen 5 to talk about today.

1. Get enough sleep

This might sound simple and straight forward but getting the correct amount of sleep can have a huge impact on your body, mentally and physically. The body needs rest to function and so does the mind, so switching off at night is vital for your mental performance. Things that can help you get a good nights sleep include daily exercise, spending less time in front of electronics over an hour before bed, and reducing your caffeine intake.

2. Its ok to say NO

I am very guilty of taking on more than I can handle. If someone asks me to do something I say “Yes, no problem” straight away. This is a nice quality but if it gets you stressed because your work load is bigger than you can manage then its ok to say no! You could even say “let me think about it and get back to you” so at least you have time to think if you can realistically take on the task. If you can, thats great! If not, say NO!

3. Accept who you are

This one has been a life long battle for me and I assume for many others too. So this one doesn’t happen over night. The first step you can take is to stop comparing yourself to others. It sounds easy but we live in a world controlled by the media so we are always surrounded by people being judged (especially on how they look) and that can have a negative effect on how you see yourself. I always think to myself how boring the world would be if we all looked and acted the same. You do you boo. Another thing we all tend to do is think negatively about ourselves. We need to turn it around. Focus on the things you like about yourself and it will have a positive impact on how you see yourself.

4. Forgive yourself

I tend to be awfully hard on myself. If I make a mistake or don’t do well in something I get into a negative state of mind. I start thinking things like “I’m useless”, “I can’t do anything right” or “why do I even bother trying?”. Its important to forgive yourself, say “its ok” and move on. After all, no one is perfect.

5. Worry less

We all have worries in life and some people worry more than others. But what is important is what you are worrying about and if you can actually change it. I had many sleepless nights worrying about things I couldn’t do a single thing about. Which was a total waste of my time. I like to refer to this as unrealistic worrying. So if you are going to worry about something, make sure its realistic i.e. you can change or do something about it.

There are many more things that could have been added to this list but maybe I’ll talk about them another time.

The most important thing I want you to take from reading this is to think a bit more about looking after your mental health. Even acknowledging the emotions you are feeling is a great start.

10 Facts About Me

Since I am still reasonably new on here I thought I would share some facts about myself so you could get to know me a little better.

1. I am a Coeliac

I was diagnosed Coeliac in 2012 even though I have been sick because of it my whole life. Since starting a gluten free diet I have gained weight (3 stone to be exact – so now I am the correct weight according to my BMI), have so much more energy and don’t get ill every time I eat something.

2. I love travelling

One of my favourite things to do is travel. Even if its within my own country. I enjoy seeing different places and what life is like there. I only wish I could travel more than I currently do.

3. I am Irish

Other Irish people will think this is obvious when they meet me but for some reason anyone from outside Ireland doesn’t normally think that I’m Irish. I think its to do with my accent. I mean, I have reddish blonde hair, blue eyes and freckles… I don’t think I could get any more Irish. But just thought I’d clear that up here as I get asked about it a lot.

4. I passed my driving test the first time

Yeah! I am always very proud when anyone asks when I passed my driving test. I still can’t believe I did it first time as I was a bag of nerves before (I got sick in the bathroom at the test centre and the Instructor had to wait outside for me to finish..). I actually enjoy driving but the test just freaked me out.

5. I love ALL animals

I studied Zoology in University so I have a huge love for creatures big and small. I also love watching any kind of shows about animals. I especially love dogs as I have had amazing relationships with many of them over the years. I always feel happy when in the company of a doggy.

6. I have an obsession with stationary

I keep a Bullet Journal myself so I like to have a variety of supplies to use in it. But sometimes I look at it all and realise I have way too much stuff. I can’t let myself go into stationary shops or stationary aisles in shops because I WILL buy something. Fair enough if I need it but most of the time its because I think its pretty.

7. My hair and nails grow super fast

This is a weird one but its true. I suppose its a good thing though as most people are the opposite. I can chop a lot off of my hair and within a couple of months it will have grown back. I also have to cut my nails every week or sometimes twice a week to keep them at the length which I like. This can be annoying as its not worth getting shellac or gel nails as I’ll have a huge section of regrowth after a week.

8. I am afraid of the sea and vomit

Everyone has fears. Mine are the open ocean and vomit. The ocean terrifies me because of the depth and not knowing what exactly is out there. I’m not particularly good with water anyway but I will attempt to get into a swimming pool. The sea however, forget about it. I have a phobia of vomit, I don’t know if that is common. I think its more the sound a person makes while vomiting that gets to me the most. Most of the time I just run away. So don’t even bother asking me to clean it up.

9. I have pretty bad eye sight

Since the age of 6 I have had to wear glasses. It started out that I had to wear them for watching tv and the blackboard in school but now I need to wear them all the time. My left eye is worse and is my “lazy” eye. My prescription at the moment is – 6.00 for my left eye and – 5.50 for my right. So my glasses are fairly chunky. I wear contacts sometimes but prefer glasses.

10. I am big into promoting Positive Mental Health

Suffering from mental health issues myself I have an understanding of what its like. Over the years I have learned how to deal with it and how speaking about it is so important. Thats why I want to promote this and get rid of the stigma attached to it. From personal experience, talking about what you are feeling can do the world of good so don’t be afraid to say whats going on with you. You will feel so much better afterwards, trust me.

I know it’s only the second week of the New Year but I’ve already had a “What the hell am I doing with my life” moment*.

I feel like if January was a person their main trait would be judgemental – Judgemental Jan is what people would call her. But, January isn’t a judgemental bitch called Jan so why do I feel like I am under immense pressure to sort my shit out!?

I can’t be the only person on this planet to feel like this? I understand that it is easy for people to start making much needed changes in their lives at the beginning of a new year. (if I see #NewYearNewMe one more time I will cry) You reflect on the previous year and evaluate who you are as a person. You decide that you can improve in some areas and therefore make resolutions or goals. But then what? See, its harder than you think.

So instead of bursting into tears and curling up into a ball on the floor, I have decided to come up with a totally foolproof way of making “resolutions” or “goals” and ACTUALLY sticking to them. You may even see some results! So no need to worry about Judgemental Jan standing over you pointing and laughing because you failed already and it’s only the second week of January.

STEP 1: Choose an achievable goal 

Let’s be real. Don’t set yourself up to fail when you haven’t even started yet. Choose a goal that you WILL be able to achieve. Being specific also helps here – for example, instead of saying “I want to lose weight” say “I want to lose 1 stone”. You could  break the goal down even further, for example “I want to lose 1lb every week until I lose 1 stone”. There it is, that’s your goal. It’s small, but it’s a start. Now how do you achieve it?

STEP 2: Break it down into actions

This is basically an action plan – what are you going to do to achieve your goal. For example, “do a workout from YouTube for 30 minutes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday” or “cook a healthy meal from scratch on Monday, Wednesday and Friday”. Don’t make the actions difficult or complicated otherwise they’re not going to work. Simplicity is key here. When you see yourself accomplishing the tasks in the action plan you can step it up a notch and make it a little more challenging. For example “do a workout from YouTube every week day”. This progression is good as it mixes things up but don’t feel under pressure to change things if they are working for you.

STEP 3: Keep track of your progress (optional but advised)

You should write down your goals and action plans so you can keep track of your progress. This in itself will be a reward as you will see results right in front of you which will give you lovely feelings on your insides. It will also motivate you to keep going if you have an “I can’t do this anymore day” as you’ll be able to see how far you’ve come already. You could set this up in a simple chart or in a diary. When you have accomplished your goal you will be able to look back at your achievement and feel proud.

Here is a very quick and simple plan I made to show how easy it is. The chart can be very motivating as you can colour in or check off each level as you achieve it.


Now what? It’s time to start thinking of your goals and how you will achieve them. I know this is all very simple but it made sense to start small and work your way up rather than diving head first into the deep end with only one floaty on when you can’t swim.

There are lots of things I want to achieve this year like saving money, focusing on my mental health, going on a holiday, getting fitter, eating healthier, creating more content and the most important – being happy!

It looks like I’ve my work cut out for me so I better get planning.

Who am I?

Hello, I’m Lisa and welcome to my blog.

I decided to write a little introduction post to let you know who I am and what you should expect to see from me on here.

My name is Lisa Turner, I am 26 years old and I live in County Wicklow Ireland.

I have been making videos on YouTube since 2013. Since the age of 8 I have always had an interest in creating videos and once YouTube appeared it was a place where ANYONE could create content about ANYTHING they wanted and upload it for the world to see. So after watching YouTube videos for a few years I finally decided to do it myself. I taught myself how to film and edit videos (you can see how I get progressively better as time goes on) which started to become a big passion of mine. I always found it hard to choose a hobby that I actually loved and was reasonably good at. So when I discovered the world of YouTube where I could be creative and make things I wanted to make, I realised I finally found a hobby that made me feel happy and I also wasn’t terrible at it. It was definitely one of the few EUREKA moments I’ve had in my life so far.

So why am I here now, writing a blog?

Writing a blog is very different to making a YouTube video. They both have their pros and cons. But what intrigues me the most about blogging is being able to write. I have always enjoyed writing  and having a blog allows me to do this in an unrestricted way. I can write about whatever I want and the best part is that I can share it with others. I enjoy being creative, giving my opinion, telling stories and helping others – blogging is just another platform where I can do this.

Like I said, I can write about whatever I want. So you will be seeing a variety of content. I have made various categories on my blog which include Beauty, Bullet Journal, Fashion, Food, Lifestyle and Travel. This may change but I’ve decided that these are the topics I am interested in and that I want to write about.
